John J. Regan, M.D. is a board certified and fellowship trained orthopedic spinal surgeon. At the forefront of the developments of minimally invasive procedures, he continues to advance the field with pioneering techniques such as video-assisted thoracic surgery, use of artificial discs and innovative techniques for the treatment of scoliosis.
Dr. Regan earned his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his medical degree from the State University of New York in Upstate Medical Center. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta before transitioning to an orthopedic surgery residency at University of North Carolina. He then completed fellowships in spine trauma at the prestigious A.O. International Hospital in Switzerland and at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Regan was one of the first spine surgeons in the world to utilize a new technique called Video-Assisted Thoracic Spine Surgery (VATS), which involves the use of laproscopic surgical instrument through a few small incisions, aided by tiny cameras and video monitors to lessen the risk of the surgery and speed up recovery. He was one of the first Southern California spine surgeons to perform both lumbar and cervical artificial disc replacements. In addition, Dr. Regan has extensive experience in adult scoliosis, having performed more than 500 successful surgeries. Currently Dr. Regan is involved in a number of Food and Drug Administration clinical trials for degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis.
Formal teaching and international presentations are a large part of Dr. Regan’s career. He has given over 75 presentations at major medical meetings and institutes. In addition to research and teaching presentations, he is the editor of the highly-acclaimed medical book “Atlas of Minimal Access Spine Surgery.” Dr. Regan has published numerous research papers in international spine journals and authored over 100 articles in peer reviewed medical journals and textbooks.
In the late 1980’s, Dr. Regan was one of the four founding spine surgeons who established the Texas Back Institute. In 2001, he relocated to Los Angeles to take the position of medical director of research and education for the Cedars-Sinai Institute of Spinal Disorders and then went on to be the director from 2002-2005, before establishing the Spine Group Beverly Hills.
Dr. Regan is a member of many professional societies including: the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, and the Mid-American Orthopaedic Association.
