Dr. Derek T. Dee is a double board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in complex arthroscopic reconstruction of the knees, shoulders and hips. At the core of his sports medicine practice is a commitment to diagnose and treat those whose symptoms have persisted, despite MRI findings or previous surgeries. Faced with even the most elusive of injuries, Dr. Dee has been able to successfully return numerous athletes to top form by combining his highly personalized approach with state-of-the-art techniques. These techniques often involve cartilage or meniscus transplant surgery, or PRP and stem cell enhancement.
Beyond his role at DISC, Dr. Dee serves as consultant to the California State University Long Beach Athletics Program and team physician for the Los Alamitos High School Football Team and the Cypress College Department of Athletics. Dr. Dee’s care of athletes has also included team physician responsibilities for the US Ski/Snowboarding team, Long Beach Jam Professional Basketball, National Women’s Football Association, Long Beach Ice Dogs Professional Hockey, California State University Fullerton, University of California, Irvine, Chapman College and Mater Dei high schools.
Dr. Dee is a passionate researcher, the author of numerous presentations spanning a broad range of orthopedic findings. His latest work involves state-of-the-art techniques for meniscus transplant and anatomic double bundle ACL reconstruction, as well as an innovative approach to repairing posterolateral corner laxity of the knee, a troubling injury that often goes undiagnosed in patients. Dr. Dee also has two patents pending for hybrid cartilage repair devices that combine technology with biologics.
Honored throughout his academic career, Dr. Dee had the opportunity to study at Oxford University’s Magdalen College before graduating from Stanford University with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then attended the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree with distinction.
Dr. Dee’s postgraduate training includes a Sports Medicine Knee/Shoulder fellowship at the Lake Tahoe Orthopaedic Institute, an Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine fellowship at the Orthopedic Specialty Institute, and an Orthopaedic residency and General Surgery internship at the University of California, Irvine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Research Society.
